OKC 2016-Day 1

After our visit to RRR Ranch,

the majority of the team sorted out all the clothes and items for the church’s sale.

(sorry, will have more photos later)

Hilltop Baptist is trying to raise enough funds to build a playground with equipment on the church property, but open to the public.

Evening meeting
Afterwards, there was a time singing/worship and teaching.

Singing was led by John, and teaching David. His teaching regarded trying to serve others, especially, in areas where are often uncomfortable for us.
David’s strengths and comfort zones are typically teaching people, but chose to serve the kids’ Vacation Bible Camp by cleaning their bathrooms. Because it was a practical way to serve the kids, but and he wanted to grow in areas that would cause him to stretch.

Afterwards, we jumped in the vans for an annual tradition, Frozen Custard with Uncle Roy. But we forgot that it usually means it’s Frozen Custard courtesy of Uncle Roy…

His generosity might outweigh his steadfast commitment to treat us to dessert. Either way, he won and treated us all.

Thanks Uncle Roy!

2013 Day 2-A good, but very very rainy day.

Site

Called ahead to Paul to check if we were still on this morning. Storms dropped a lot of rain, but we were cleared for the morning.
Roy gave his devotional this morning, encouraging us to do all things for the glory of God. We put down the cameras and went to work….apparently without any morning stretches. We kept Heang away from Steve so that he’d learn “other” skills.
Calvin
While we were there Chris and Craig ran into Calvin, a friend we had met a few years ago. They had the opportunity to pray for him again. The threads of our lives keep interconnecting. The theme for this week seems to include seeing long term impact. Of a major storm’s devastation, of Habitat’s assistance in recovery, our friendships with people we’ve met every year. God continues to show us the big picture.
Buildin’ and Workin’
Trying to stay ahead of the storm, we raised almost all four walls, and began sheeting them.

Rain Rain, go away
The rain returned with strength. We quickly packed up all power related equipment, clearing the deck, and ducked under, and cut our workday by a few hours.

Prayer
Since it was our last day on site, we prayed for it before we left. We prayed with/for our Americorps staff, and spent some time in silent prayer, blessing the home.

Happy Birthday Roy
After the storm, we went to Quakes for ice cream frozen custard. Pam said to make sure we identify it as such because Roy likes it better. Roy has celebrated his birthday for the last few years with us in Mississippi. Later, he told us as much as he loves his family and friends, it’s been special experiencing it out here. Still don’t understand why, when it’s his birthday, he treats us.

2012 05 01-Good morning (and happy bday Uncle Roy!)

James is back at home probably sleeping or riding a bike or running or something, but in his seat is Gary. Gary and Craig arrived Sunday night, but today will be their first day on the job site.

We head out a bit weary, but very re-energized by the additional support of these two key vets, but also from an unlikely source, two new friends, Jim and Shirley (who wants us to refer to her as “Nannie”). While slathering on our morning sunscreen by the cars, all the guys were commenting on Jim and Nannie’s words from the night before. When asked why he comes down to work on these projects, especially at 80+, Jim said “we come down to make God look good, that’s all we have to do,” “I don’t need to see another castle.” The words fell on a smiling but silent and humbled group of men.

Put so simply, it was humbling to hear that perspective from someone that has gone before us. Nannie piped in “I want you to know, that I wouldn’t have come down unless God told me so.” Their friendly servant conviction was inspiring and … well.. once again, humbling.

And these two are going to be working with us on the job site.

I hope we can keep up with them.

Oh, and speaking of keeping up, we have a wounded warrior, Steve. Steve, the marathon man, likely the most fit of us all, has been carefully guarding his recovering right ankle. But when he woke up Sunday morning with his swollen left ankle, it came as a total surprise. We continue to ask for your prayers for his recovery, and also for his patience in his current state. Flexibility is both a physical and a emotional thing. We look forward to seeing how God will use him today.

Tommy’s devotional this morning was simple and sweet. Last week, while working on the window sills, Pam and Millie were trying to get the cuts just right. Tommy told them “that’s why God invented caulk.” (Caulk is that white silicone fills spaces in the wall) “It’s like grace, it covers a multitude of sins,” he continued. But as Tommy reflected on his joke, he says that the commonly used phrase kind of cheapens Grace. Grace doesn’t mask and cover over your mistake, it redeems it.

With that in mind, we thank you for your support and pray that you experience the Grace of God in your life today.

Millie just called to wish us a good morning and made a point to wish Uncle Roy a happy bday. If you get a chance, please take the time to read her entry.
